Cavity wall insulation takes around 2-3 hours

A professional insulation installer will be able to install insulation within your cavity walls in around 2-3 hours, with the minimum of disruption. By drilling a series of small holes into your outer wall (around 25mm), they will then inject insulation material (usually mineral wool/fibre glass) into the cavity. The material contains tiny pockets of air that prevent cooler air passing through.

Around 60% of Britain’s homes  are suitable for cavity wall insulation.

A gap (or cavity) needs to be present between the two layers of brick which make up your outer wall. For most houses built between 1924 and 1995, cavity walls will have been constructed and therefore will be suitable for insulation. If your home was built prior to this time, it is likely to have been constructed with solid walls. In this case, alternative products can be sourced to help minimise heat loss, but unfortunately these are not covered by insulation grants.

To check if your home has cavity wall: if your outside wall measures 30 cm thick, then chances are you have a cavity wall. Anything less than this and its most than likely to be solid.

Cavity wall insulation grants are available in England, Scotland and Wales (other schemes operating in NI) and can provide you with a grant for between 40-100% of the cost of insulating your property. The level of grant you receive will depend on your age, salary and whether you receive benefits. Those in receipt of benefits or are over the age of 70 will automatically be eligible for 100% off the cost of cavity wall or loft insulation. For everyone else, a grant for around 40% will be received. This does not have to be paid back.
